蝉時雨が降り注ぐ午後二時。丘の上のバス停は、アスファルトの照り返しで陽炎の中にゆらめいていた。赤い屋根の下、高校二年生の陽葵（ひまり）は、大きなギターケースを足元に置いて、磨かれたベンチに深く腰掛けていた。
今日は地区予選の日だった。けれど、彼女は会場とは反対方向のバスを待っている。指先には、練習でできた硬いタコがある。あんなに夢中だった音楽が、いつの間にか他人と比べ、数字で測られる苦痛に変わっていた。 「逃げちゃったな……」 独り言をつぶやき、ベンチの表面をなぞる。数年前に誰かが手入れをしたのか、木肌は驚くほど滑らかで、不思議と心を落ち着かせる手触りだった。
その時、一匹の野良猫がひょいとベンチに飛び乗ってきた。猫は陽葵の顔をじっと見つめると、ギターケースの上に丸まって昼寝を始めた。 「……あんたはいいよね、自由で」 ふっと肩の力が抜けた。バスが坂の下から現れる。けれど、彼女は立ち上がらなかった。この滑らかなベンチに座って、猫の寝息を聞いているうちに、「負けたくない」という意地よりも、「ただ弾きたい」という最初の気持ちが、熱を帯びて戻ってきたからだ。 陽葵は次のバスを待つことにした。戻るためではなく、もう一度自分と向き合うための、少し長い休憩。赤い屋根は、迷える彼女を強い日差しから守るように、静かに影を落としていた。
At 2:00 PM, amidst a downpour of cicada cries, the hilltop bus stop shimmered in the heat haze rising from the asphalt. Under the red roof, Himari, a high school junior, sat deep on the bench with a large guitar case at her feet.
Today was the day of the regional qualifiers. However, she was waiting for a bus headed in the opposite direction of the venue. Her fingertips were calloused from practice. The music she had once been so passionate about had somehow turned into a painful cycle of comparison and metrics. “I really ran away…” she whispered, tracing the surface of the bench. Perhaps someone had maintained it years ago; the wood was surprisingly smooth, possessing a texture that was strangely calming.
Just then, a stray cat hopped onto the bench. After staring at Himari for a moment, it curled up on top of her guitar case and began to nap. “Must be nice, being so free,” she murmured. Suddenly, the tension left her shoulders. A bus appeared from the bottom of the hill. Yet, she didn’t stand up. Sitting on this smooth wood, listening to the cat’s gentle breathing, her initial desire to “just play” began to glow hotter than her stubborn pride. Himari decided to wait for the next bus. Not to go back home, but to take a long breather and face herself once more. The red roof cast a quiet shadow over her, as if shielding the lost girl from the harsh glare of the sun.
