ある日、村の広場に「真実の姿を映し出す」という魔法の鏡が置かれた。村人たちは我先にと鏡の前に立った。誰もが自分の内にある慈悲深さや、高潔な善人面が映し出されることを期待していたのだ。
しかし、鏡が示したのは残酷な現実だった。村のまとめ役を自認する長老が覗き込めば、そこには私腹を肥やすことしか考えない強欲な豚が映り、親切だと評判の婦人が立てば、獲物を狙う狡猾な狐の姿が浮かび上がった。暴かれる本性に村人たちは騒然となり、互いへの不信感で広場は凍り付いた。
そこへ、村一番の嫌われ者である伍助がふらりと現れた。彼は粗暴で口が悪く、誰からも忌み嫌われている男だった。「どうせ化け物でも映るだろう」と村人が嘲笑する中、彼が鏡の前に立つ。
その瞬間、鏡から神々しい光が溢れ出した。そこに映ったのは、汚れなき衣を纏い、慈愛に満ちた眼差しを向ける光輝く聖者の姿だった。村人たちは驚愕し、彼こそが真の善人だったのだと膝をついて崇め始めた。
しかし、伍助は鏡の中の自分を見つめ、自嘲気味に吐き捨てた。 「勘違いするな。この鏡は魂の善悪なんて映しちゃいない。『本人が自分をどう信じ込んでいるか』を映しているだけだ。お前らは心のどこかで後ろめたさを抱えているが、俺は違う。俺は、自分だけは常に正しいと心底信じ込んでいる本物の狂人なんだよ」
聖者の光に包まれながら、男は歪んだ笑い声を上げた。
One day, a magical mirror said to “reflect one’s true form” was placed in the village square. The villagers rushed to stand before it, each expecting to see their inner compassion or noble virtue revealed.
However, the mirror showed a cruel reality. When the elder, who prided himself as the village leader, looked in, he saw a greedy pig obsessed with self-interest. When a woman renowned for her kindness stood before it, the image of a cunning fox stalking its prey appeared. Terrified by their exposed natures, the villagers fell into a chaotic silence, frozen by mutual distrust.
Then, Gosuke, the most hated man in the village, strolled up. He was a coarse, foul-mouthed man shunned by everyone. “He’ll surely turn into a monster,” the villagers mocked as he stepped in front of the glass.
In that instant, a divine light spilled from the mirror. Reflected there was a radiant saint, clad in pure white robes, with eyes full of boundless love. The villagers gasped in shock, falling to their knees to worship him as the only truly righteous soul among them.
But Gosuke stared at his reflection and spat with a self-mocking sneer.
”Don’t get it twisted. This mirror doesn’t show the good or evil of a soul. It simply reflects what a person truly believes about themselves. All of you carry guilt somewhere deep inside. But not me. I am a genuine madman who believes, with every fiber of my being, that I am always right.”
Wrapped in the saintly glow, the man let out a twisted, echoing laugh.
